1942 - Why is this year considered the critical period of the war?

1942: The Critical Point of The Land of the Rising Sun by Prem, Sea, and Tej

At the start of 1942, Japan was one of the most powerful countries in the world, but after American involvement in the war, and the victory in the battle of Midway, Japan lost Naval Power.

Italy was on Germany's side and was quite probably the worst ally ever. First they invaded France at the same time as Germany and did badly. Then they invaded Greece and did even worst. They also invaded North Africa and were defeated. Mussolini got captured by his own countrymen. Italy was invaded and finally surrendered after having only a negative affect on the Nazis' overall strategy.
